Chores & the Montessori Child

Chores may sound like the last thing we want to hear as an adult. However, children are capable (and more than willing!) to help us out around the house. We’ve put together a list of some age-appropriate duties you can start implementing at home with your Montessori child.
12 – 18 MONTHS

• Pour their own glass of milk/water
• Wipe up spills with a hand-mitt
• Bring you a diaper/underwear
• Choose between two options of outfits for the day
• Brush hair
• Wash hands
• Put away their bath toys
• Turn on/off light switch

18 MONTHS – 3 YEARS
NOTE: Children can do all chores above plus the ones below

• Baking (measuring & mixing ingredients)
• Scrub & peel veggies
• Dress without assistance
• Flush the toilet
• Place wet clothing in laundry
• Wash hair (use travel bottles to minimize waste)
• Feed pets
• Fold socks
• Vacuuming

Adult-supervision should always be used along with patience and a good dose of humor. Please don’t ever make a child feel they’ve done a bad job when “Practical Life Skills” are being taught and they are willingly wanting to learn and help.
